KAREN SHIDELER
meaningful movement

Hi, I'm Karen
I am a lover of all forms of movement and am passionate about helping people create a deeper connection with their bodies and minds. I have been teaching yoga and group fitness in Southern California since 2012 and bring a wealth of knowledge and expertise to my classes. I am known for my authentic and intentional teaching style and specialize in leading classes that are dynamic, informative, and empowering.
My Story
I took my first yoga class in 2008 after a friend “convinced” me to go with her. At the time, I was struggling to manage my stress and anxiety levels and was feeling insecure and disconnected. I had always been interested in trying yoga, but I felt like it wasn't for me. I didn’t consider myself athletic or flexible like all the other people who practiced yoga seemed to be, however, I learned very quickly that all you need for class is a willingness to show up for yourself.

The more I attended class the more it felt like little pieces of the practice beyond just the physical stuff were being carried with me off of my mat and in to my life. In college, I chose to major in Sociology to better understand the world around me, but it was many years as a yoga student that ultimately led me to better understand myself in the world. After I came to realize how transformative and empowering this practice was, I felt compelled to share my experience with others.

I completed my 200 hour certification in 2012 through True Flow Yoga as well as the Yoga Therapy RX level one program at Loyola Marymount University in 2014. Those first two trainings were a jumping point for me to become more interested in refining my teaching skills and explore other forms of movement. I have since received extensive training in anatomy and sequencing and along with teaching yoga, lead fitness-based group classes, hold multiple pilates and barre certifications, and train/mentor new teachers.

One of my main priorities as a teacher is to make sure my classes feel welcoming and informative. I try to encourage movement as a means of exploration and inquiry instead of a dogmatic "one size fits all" approach. I also do my best to use non-gendered language and avoid topics around diet culture that include food and body shaming. These practices have given me the ability to foster a deep connection to community that extends far beyond my own well-being. I hope that my teaching inspires people to find more freedom in being themselves, and that when they leave my classes and step back into the world, they take with them an unshakeable confidence built from the inside out.
